The figure shows one of the biological filter materials produced by BFS KG. It consists to 40 vol-percent out of special compost and to 60 vol-percent out of inert support grain (Styrofoam pellets 6 – 8 mm). Optionally, the material can be injected with specific microorganisms in order to achieve a better adaption of the biology.
Advantages: large internal surface area due to frayed fibres, structurally stable, long service-life, minimal pressure loss
Disadvantages: small active surface, irregular moisture distribution
Advantages: hardly any microbiological degradation, therefore long service-life
Disadvantages: no nutrients or nutritive salt reservoir, low colonisation by micro-organisms, low water retention capacity
Advantages: good drainage capability, stable structure
Disadvantages: low colonisation of micro-organisms, poor decomposition performance
